Activities and Shopping

The Summit, at the top of South Grade at State Park Road is Palomar Mountains’ only commercial center. This small group of commercial buildings houses a small grocery store/gift shop, a café, a staffed US Post Office and public restroom facilities. Be aware…there are NO gas stations on Palomar Mountain, so be sure to fill up before your arrival.

Just two miles west on State Park Road (S-6) is Palomar Mountain State Park. With numerous hiking trails, nature walks and excellent camping facilities the park is a great place to visit. Within the park you will find Doane Pond. Doane Pond is a perfect place to take the kids fishing. Call the park to find out when they are stocking with trout. Visit the website for ranger scheduled activities.

Five miles from the lodge, northwest on Canfield Road the world famous Palomar Observatory offers a glimpse into the galaxies. Self guided Observatory tours are available daily and a visitor can see the Hubble Telescope and numerous photos of the far reaches of space. Curios and educational materials are available at the gift shop.

The Palomar Mountain General Store, only .7 mile from the lodge is the mountain’s only store. Don’t miss it. It offers a wide variety of unique gifts from around the world to include Tribal Art, Gems, Fossils and Crystals. You can pick up ice creams for the kids while Mom gets tempted by the gorgeous earrings or clothing. You will find some basic grocery items so you won’t starve. Next door to the store, Mother’s Kitchen serves an extensive menu of delicious vegetarian dishes. For your sweet tooth, they make amazing pies and cakes as well as shakes and malts. There are also several campgrounds on the mountain, and a county day use park for picnicking. You can buy wonderful free range grass fed beef or participate in day programs and cattle drives by calling Palomar Mountain Ranch. Owned by descendants of two of the first families on the mountain this ranch offers western experiences, horseback riding, and many cattle ranch experiences for flatlanders visiting the Mountain. The Bailey family run Bailey’s Palomar Resort, a country lodge with a number of rustic cabins.

Dining and Gaming

Within half an hour of the lodge there are four beautiful Casinos. To the west 18 miles you will find the Pauma Casino. To the south 15 miles on Valley Center Road, Harrah’s Rincon Casino, Hotel and Spa caters to east coast high rollers. Further south is the Valley View Casino. Each of these casinos operates a number of excellent restaurant and hosts shows and concerts throughout the year.

Around the base of the mountain there are several fun dining experiences. To the east, on the shores of Lake Henshaw you will find Lake Henshaw Resort, and their Roundup BBQ Grill serving wood-fired and rotisserie meats. They frequently have entertainment on the week end by local musicians and the drive to get there is beautiful. For fine dining in an upscale lovely country atmosphere The Lazy H Resort Restaurant on Hwy 76 in Pauma Valley is wonderful. You can go dressed up or in your blue jeans and feel welcome and it is only 13.9 miles away from the lodge. Sometimes reservations are helpful.

At the base of South Grade Road west on Hwy 76 at 17128 Highway 76 in Pauma Valley, CA 92061 before you get to the Lazy H is Jilbertos Taco Shop serving a full menu of yummy Mexican food. Stop by on the way up to Palomar and pick up lunch or dinner. Or call first 760-742-1896 and order your favorites to eat there or bring up to the lodge. Next door is a small but complete market with a meat counter too.

Fishing, Golf and More

Lake Henshaw is one of San Diego’s better fishing lakes. You can fish from the shore or rent a boat and explore the various hot spots on the lake for bass, crappie, bluegill and trout. Lake Henshaw Resort also has a grocery store with fishing gear and bait and a café. A short way down Highway 76 toward Santa Ysabel, there is a Bald Eagle nest where you can see mom and dad Bald Eagle feeding their babies.

Dining and Gaming

The Pala Casino Hotel and Spa, 23 miles to the west down Hwy 76, is a full service Las Vegas type Casino. East of Palomar 19.6 miles, Santa Ysabel Resort & Casino is San Diego County's newest Indian casino. This mountain lodge themed casino, has a restaurant with scenic views of the mountain country. Dudley's is a lovely bakery restaurant and famous bakery a few miles beyond the casino at the Santa Ysabel junction. Enjoy the many dining choices in the little mining town of Julian.
 

Golf, Shopping, Sight Seeing:

So many “Must dos!” Visit the historic Santa Ysabel Mission and its small but interesting museum, take a glider ride over the back country to soar with the eagles at the Warner Springs Glider Port, spend a day touring the quaint little old west town of Julian, or relax at the Spa at Warner Springs, or golf at Warners Springs only 25 miles away. The old mining town of Julian (30 miles) is a popular place for antiquing, old west shopping and casual dining. You can take a tour of the old gold mine, the local winery or stop for a glass of sarsaparilla or a piece of local apple pie. Golf is also available at Woods Valley Golf Club just 23 miles away.

To the east just over the mountains is the wonderful desert town of Borrego Springs. In spring people from all over the world come to the explosion of color that comes with the blooming of the spring desert flowers. You will find casual to elegant (Casa de Zorro) dining and lovely shops in this fun town. At the Badlands of the Anza Borrego Desert you can drive your 4x4 up the sandy washes into some of the most rugged terrain you have ever seen, even wind caves. You will learn why they are called “badlands”. The Anza Borrego State Park headquarters and interpretive center are located next to beautiful Palm Canyon, an oasis in the badlands.

You can also enjoy any of San Diego County’s world renowned tourist attractions. In addition to the miles of beautiful white sandy beaches, you can visit Sea World, the World famous San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. Also Legoland and Balboa Park await you. Go north and west and you will be in Anaheim for Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm.
